Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

Exam Pattern

The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers, both of which are objective type (multiple-choice questions). 

  • Paper I: General Studies (GS)
  • Marks: 200
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Syllabus: Current events, History of India and Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity and Climate Change, General Science.

  • Paper II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)
  • Marks:200
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Syllabus: Comprehension, Interpersonal skills including communication skills, Logical reasoning and analytical ability, Decision-making and problem-solving, General mental ability, Basic numeracy, Data interpretation.


Note: Paper II is qualifying in nature, and candidates must score a minimum of 33% to qualify. The marks obtained in Paper I are considered for ranking and determining eligibility for the Main Examination.


Important Dates for Prelims 2024

- Notification Release: February 2024

- Prelims Exam Date: June 2024

- Result Declaration: August 2024


 Main Examination (Mains)

 Exam Pattern

The Main Examination is descriptive and consists of nine papers, out of which two are qualifying in nature and seven are considered for final ranking.


Qualifying Papers

- Paper A: Indian Language (300 marks)

  - Note: Candidates can choose from the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

- Paper B: English (300 marks)


Note: The marks obtained in these papers are not counted for ranking, but candidates must score at least 25% in each paper to qualify.


Papers for Merit

  • Paper I: Essay (250 marks)
  • Papers II to V: General Studies (250 marks each)
  •  Paper II: General Studies I - Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society.
  •  Paper III: General Studies II - Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.
  •  Paper IV: General Studies III - Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management.
  • Paper V: General Studies IV - Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
  • Papers VI and VII: Optional Subject (250 marks each)
  • Note: Candidates can choose one optional subject from a list provided by UPSC.

Total Marks for Merit: 1750

- Mains Exam Date: September 2024

- Result Declaration: December 2024


Personality Test (Interview)

 Exam Pattern

  •  Format: Oral interview
  • Marks:275


The Personality Test assesses the candidate's suitability for a career in public service by judging their mental caliber, critical thinking, and social traits such as leadership qualities, intellectual curiosity, and moral integrity.


 Important Dates for Interview 2024

- Interview Dates: February-March 2025

- Final Results: April 2025


Final Merit List

The final merit list is prepared based on the total marks obtained in the Main Examination (1750 marks) and the Personality Test (275 marks), making a grand total of 2025 marks.
